Notes on the Monuments Tour

One of my favorite things to recommend to tourists as it relates to the memorials is to tour them at night. Put on your walking shoes because you will easily get your steps in. Start at the Washington Monument and walk toward the WWII Memorial, from there walk down the reflecting pool toward Lincoln Memorial then walk toward Independence Ave and head east toward MLK Memorial. From the MLK Memorial walk down the Tidal Basin toward FDR Memorial. At the end of the MLK Memorial you can walk to Jefferson Memorial or walk back to Independence Ave and head back to Washington Monument.

Washington Monument

Timed tickets are required to ride the elevator to the 500 foot observation deck and may be obtained in person or online.

Lincoln Memorial

You can walk all the way around the monument to see Arlington Cemetery. Don't miss Dr. MLK speech spot on the stairs.

MLK Memorial

Dr. King’s likeness is carved into the Stone of Hope, emerging from two boulders, which started as one and represent the Mountain of Despair.

FDR Memorial

FDR is my favorite memorial to go to at night. The waterfalls are backlit.
